Question 8: What’s at Stake and Why Your Vote Matters

Election Day is almost here. On Tuesday, November 3, Massachusetts voters will decide the future of legal recreational cannabis sales. At Zahara, we’re encouraging a No vote on Question 8.
We’ve covered what the proposal means, how it could affect jobs, and the businesses connected to the cannabis industry. Before you vote, here’s a simple recap.

What does Question 8 mean?

  • A Yes vote would end legal recreational cannabis sales in Massachusetts and repeal the laws that regulate and tax those sales.
  • A No vote would keep the current cannabis laws in place.
If approved, the changes would take effect on January 1, 2028. Medical cannabis would remain legal, and adults 21 and older could still possess limited amounts. That doesn’t mean recreational dispensaries could keep operating as they do today.

What’s at stake?

Legal access. Adults would lose the ability to purchase recreational cannabis through the state’s licensed retail system.
Businesses and jobs. Ending recreational sales would disrupt dispensaries, growers, manufacturers, and the people who work for them.
Community revenue. Massachusetts and its cities and towns would lose tax revenue from recreational cannabis sales.
These are the reasons Zahara opposes Question 8. We support keeping a legal, regulated cannabis market and continuing to improve it.
